Latest Update - February 2006
Coming together to kick off 2006
We began 2006 with a retreat of all the Kufundees. It included many new members of Kufunda, our trustees, Toke and Iben from Denmark and Phil from the US. It was a time to come together after the holidays to build the base to act with wisdom and strength in 2006 The retreat and the days around it were very special. Everyone came in with all of themselves - their excitement, their fear, their doubts, their hopes. We have in the last months been in an on-going exploration around what it would mean to more fully become a centre demonstrating self-reliance and sustainability in all aspects. Our main shift involves becoming organised around key programmes (Kufunda as a demonstration centre; Healthy Living; Caring for the Young; Economic Self-reliance, and Stoves and Toilets). During the retreat, we spent much time working through the practicalities of this. Below we write more about some of what is planned for 2006. Thank you to Toke, Phil and Iben for joining us and making it such a rich process.
Kufunda as a demonstration centre
We have been talking about wanting to be a model village for a while, but, since our inception, have placed a larger emphasis on the work in the communities. This year a small team will have as their main focus building Kufunda into a demonstration centre displaying the technologies and methods, which we are learning and experimenting with. This includes fully embracing the permaculture principles in our designs and landscaping around the village; going further with our wonderfully rustic compost toilets (see picture); deepening our experiments around organic dry land farming and more. The team has already begun. They will be busy for years to come ;-). You are welcome to come and join them anytime for a week or several months!
Caring for the young
The work with younger people and children is an area which is growing at Kufunda not so much as part of a grand strategic plan, but simply because it is already happening in the communities, and as a result of women around Kufunda coming together to create the Kufunda preschool in 2005. This team of women have joined Kufunda formally as a programme team. They will focus on developing the Kufunda preschool to be a demonstration of what is possible in working with children with very few resources, but lots of love and care. They intend to set up a preschool project network with the many community organizers in our partner communities doing similar work and to host learning and sharing sessions at Kufunda during the course of the year. Already we have received generous support for this work, including support for three out of six of the preschools to be able to provide a nutritious meal daily to the children and orphans in their care. Should you want to step into this area, please contact marianne@kufunda.org for more information.
Community Planning Workshop
Soon after our own team retreat was over we hosted a three-day workshop for representatives of each of our partner communities. During three days of buzzing, community organizers shared experiences from 2005 what had worked, and what they had learned that they wished to further in 2006. Through the use of open space technology all the planning and work-grouping was entirely self-organised around the areas and projects that people felt the most committed to and passionate about. Plans for 2006 complemented much of what the village itself is doing. It includes deepening the work with the aids orphans in the communities through the preschool initiatives as well as through herb and nutrition garden projects. There is great excitement around the spread of the jengeta huni stoves, as well as the continued spread of the compost toilets.
Education Fund Update
In 2005 the Kufunda Education Fund supported 118 children, most of them orphans. We have been able to increase our numbers at the beginning of 2006 to 185 children for the first term. 45 additional children are likely to be added to the fund for the second and third terms. The total fees came to 855 USD. We are considering also paying for exercise books for the children as we have realized that many of the children cannot afford to buy exercise books, and so actually don t have the needed books to use for their different exercises and assignments. Another plan on the horizon is to support the pre-schools to become learning centres, with small libraries and learning support offered to the scholarship children by the community organizers. If anyone is keen to help with books and other similar resources, please contact jackie@kufunda.org We would like to use this opportunity to thank all those people who have contributed to the education fund, and also National Women's Studies Association Journal (of the US) who has recently made a large donation of books, which has kick started the Kufunda Village library.
Additional News and Projects
Jackie Cahi our new operations co-ordinator has fully entered the Kufunda family. She seems to like us, and we are very appreciative of what she is already bringing to the village with her energy and drive. We are setting up library at Kufunda finally with many old and donated books. As part of this Claudia, our German volunteer, is spearheading the creation of a study circle come book club, where Kufundees come together in shared learning around different themes and areas of study. We have not yet launched the community currency, which has been in the pipelines for a little over a year. We are hoping for 2006 to be the year, and only need a little funding for the printing of the currency. For more please email Marianne@kufunda.org Several infrastructure development projects are under way. We are shifting to a larger building as our new office, given the additional team members who have joined the Kufunda support team. We are beginning the rammed earth building which will house the preschool and community hall in April with community organizers joining in with the building work to learn the technology which is all natural and cement free. We are upgrading our compost toilets to make them a little more comfortable and pleasing to the eye :) The healthy living team focusing primarily on herbs and nutrition is still surging forward. We will share updates on their adventures in the next newsletter.
